The Efficiency Trap: Escaping the Illusion of Getting Everything Done
We have maximized our productivity. So why are we still feeling rushed, behind, and overworked?
We have followed the avalanche of advice on how to best manage our time. We have succeeded in maximizing our efficiency and productivity. Yet, many of us are busier, more stressed, and more discontented than ever. Just like Lucy and Ethel in the famous Chocolate Factory episode of I Love Lucy, time feels like an unstoppable conveyor belt, bringing new tasks faster than we can complete the ones already on our to-do lists. The more productive we become and the more we get done, the more we have to do.
In Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals, Oliver Burkeman pushes back against the obsession with getting everything done. He argues that there will always be more to do than we can manage. The average life span, he notes, is an insultingly short four thousand weeks and while our task list is infinite, our time is finite. If we continue to believe that mastering everything is possible, we will continue to struggle. Instead, Burkeman suggests we confront the futility of striving to master time and accept that we cannot get done all that we have to do. Only then can we start to live a more meaningful life.
